Mulberry Street, Manhattan

Artist Trust is a wonderful organization that provides support to launch and sustain Washington State artists through grants, professional career training and a variety of other resources. My participation in the 2008 Artist Trust EDGE Professional Development Program had a profound effect on advancing my photograph career.

The benefit will take place on February 19, 2011 at the Fischer Pavilion, Seattle Center, and will include a curator preview tour and a champagne reception with visual art experts Kathleen Moles & Jordan Howland starting at 5:00pm, followed by a silent auction, performances, dinner and live auction starting at 6:00pm. The auction artwork may be viewed online. This event is already sold-out, but it is possible to support Artist Trust through on-line donations.

NYC Photo Trip and PowerHouse Portfolio Review

I just returned from a three-day visit to NYC to attend the PowerHouse Portfolio Reviews, to visit some museums and galleries, and to wander about doing a bit of street photography. I had fortunately booked a non-stop flight from Seattle to JFK, so I arrived on Thursday afternoon without any difficulties despite the massive storm which swept the nation earlier in the week. The weather was clear and cold, with a fair amount of snow piled everywhere. After checking into my hotel in Brooklyn, I went to Chinatown for the Chinese New Year's celebrations.

I headed over to Chelsea on Friday morning for a gallery crawl. My first stop was Viridian Artists where I had two prints hanging in their 1st Annual Photography show juried by Elisabeth Sussman, Curator of Photography at the Whitney Museum. I was honored to see my work there and my timing was good since the show ended on Saturday.

I then spent several hours visiting a number of other Chelsea galleries. I particularly enjoyed From the Picture Press at the Alan Klotz Gallery, Marcia Resnick’s Bad Boys: Punks, Poets and Provocateurs at the Deborah Bell Gallery. I also saw Todd Hido’s Fragmented Narratives at the Bruce Silverstein Gallery. I then had a chance to stop by Aperture Gallery to see the reGeneration2 exhibition. I next headed crosstown to the Metropolitan Museum to see the Stieglitz, Steichen, Strand exhibition. The show had many gorgeous platinum and palladium prints, and informative historical commentary. Also showing at the museum was an exhibition entitled Our Future Is In The Air – Photographs from the 1910s, which included a lovely print of Boulevard de Strasbourg by Eugene Atget.

The weather on Saturday turn to rainy and blustery, and I headed to midtown to the International Center of Photography to see The Mexican Suitcase – images by Robert Capa, David Seymour and Gerda Taro from the Spanish Civil War, from lost negatives that were recovered in Mexico City in 2007. Large color work by Chinese photographer Wang Qinsong was also on display. I then walked over to the Laurence Miller Gallery to see the impressive retrospective work of Ray K. Metzger. That left me just enough time to head down to the Leica Gallery in SOHO to see Unposed by Craig Semetko and Street Smart Misha Erwitt.

The PowerHouse Portfolio reviews were on Sunday morning, and I was awarded a complimentary set of reviews
for winning First Place in the Capture Brooklyn Exhibition last September. The HumanKind Exhibition was still up, and I was glad to see my print Mulberry Street, Manhattan on display. For my reviews I met with Jon Feinstein of the Humble Arts Foundation, Jessie Wender, Associate Picture Editor of The New Yorker, Craig Cohen, Publisher, PowerHouse Books, Sean Corcoran, Curator of Prints and Photographs, Museum of the City of New York, and Jackie Ladner, Assistant Photo Editor of New York Magazine. I showed work from my Sidewalks of New York series and my Metro series, and all of the reviewers provided useful suggestions and insights. My last review ended at 2:30 and it was a beautiful afternoon – perfect for a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge and a little more street photography.
